Media Room Retreat
What started as unused space above the garage became an opportunity to create a nice leisure space for this family. Our goals were comfort, privacy, and flexibility, and we achieved them without affecting the flow or function of the rest of the home.

Media Room Remodel

Media Room Retreat

Project summary:

With two kids on the cusp of their teenage years, this expanding family needed to update their home to better suit their evolving needs. They had a spacious bonus room upstairs and an attic located above the garage. To some, it may seem like a wasted space. To Ten Key Remodels, it was a wellspring of untapped potential. We envisioned transforming this attic into a private, cozy media room perfect for family movie nights and relaxation. After chatting with the clients and exploring their ideas, we crafted a design and plan that brought this exciting new space to life.

To make the new space even more functional and self-sufficient, we added a small bathroom to the design. Featuring a full shower and toilet, this addition ensures that the area is not only modern and stylish but also perfectly equipped for the kids to enjoy hours of leisure. Now, the space is a well-rounded retreat that seamlessly combines comfort and convenience.

Our process, step-by-step

The Before Stage

This attic was the perfect blank canvas for our design wings to be spread. With no previous purpose, this space could easily be transformed into just about anything. That being said, the space also required a lot of forethought, including electrical and plumbing installations.

Design & Planning Stage

The client’s idea to transform this space into a media room for teenagers was a guiding star for this project. The central feature is the media center with plenty of cozy seating and controllable lighting. The bathroom, too, is organized around convenience and elegance.

Finished Project

This finalized attic project now functions as an extension of the home while also offering privacy. Whether they opt for board games or a movie night, these teenagers can count on a comfortable and enjoyable stay in their new space – just as intended!

Most people see an attic as storage. We saw potential. With the right plan, even overlooked spaces can become a favorite part of the home.

How we planned and built this attic finish

attic remodel with widened doorway

The Before Stage

When we first stepped inside, the attic was completely unfinished—exposed beams, loose insulation, bare wiring, and a single light bulb hanging from the ceiling. It wasn’t a place you could safely or comfortably spend time in, let alone create art or host a family. The space felt dark, cramped, and disconnected from the rest of the home, with no real purpose, not even for storage.

Design & Planning Stage

We wanted the attic to feel open and bright, so we raised it to 10-foot ceilings and kept the layout simple. Good lighting was key for an art studio, so we installed Sola solar lights with dimmers to control the brightness throughout the day. The old narrow doorway was widened, and we added a small set of stairs with a sturdy handrail, making the space easy and safe to get to.

The Finished Project

The transformation is night and day. The attic is now a bright, welcoming retreat with soft, neutral colors, warm wood accents, and plenty of light. There’s space for painting, room to add pilates equipment in the future, and an inviting area for the couple’s grandchildren to play. It’s no longer just extra square footage, but one of the most loved rooms in the house.

When you look at an attic, you usually see storage. Well, we saw an opportunity. This project shows how, with the right plan, even the most overlooked spaces can become a favorite part of the home.

Making the Most of Your Attic Space

Family-Friendly Attic Conversion

Project summary:

Our clients had big plans for their attic. With such a high roofline, they knew the capability was there to turn it into a space that felt like a true part of their home. A playroom for their kiddos, cozy spot for movie nights, a stylish retreat for guests, and just the right place to relax. So, we made it happen. We turned that unused space into a warm and inviting retreat, complete with a media room, a comfortable bedroom, a full bathroom, a walk-through closet, and a sleek wet bar.

Project notes:

  • Remove outdated countertops and vanity
  • Dismantle old plumbing fixtures
  • Demolished all existing flooring and shower tiles
  • Remove concrete to accommodate a new curbless shower design
  • Install double shaker doors and drawers
  • Add reeded top drawers
  • Paint walls and ceilings

How the project came together

attic walk-through closet design

The Before Stage

When we first stepped into the attic, it was nothing more than a dark, unfinished space—dusty, cluttered, and lacking purpose. Exposed beams, uneven flooring, and minimal lighting made it feel more like a forgotten storage area than a space with potential. The ceiling angles made the layout tricky, and with no insulation, it was freezing in the winter and stifling in the summer. But we could see past all that.

Design & Planning Stage

We aimed for a true second-story feel by matching the downstairs finishes and keeping the color palette cohesive. A large rear dormer added plenty of natural light without changing the front exterior. The design includes a custom reading nook with built-in storage, adjustable desks, a recessed TV cabinet, and a spacious storage room over the garage.

Finished Project

Stepping into the attic now, it’s hard to believe it was ever anything but bright, cozy, and full of life. Natural light floods the space, bouncing off the warm, soothing color palette that makes every corner feel welcoming. Every detail, from the natural textures to the perfectly chosen finishes, has been chosen with both function and beauty in mind, proving that with the right vision, no space is wasted.
