Designed for One-Level Living

Modern Organic Whole Home Remodel

Project summary:

This one started with a big question: how do you make a home larger, without turning daily life into a construction-zone nightmare? The answer was a carefully phased 1,800+ square feet addition that kept everything on one level and reshaped the layout around how they actually live and host.

We added big south-facing windows, improved cross-ventilation, and lighting that made it all come together. The two-kitchen setup is the real game-changer: a show kitchen for gathering, plus a working kitchen that keeps the “real-life” appliances neatly tucked away. Beyond the kitchen, the living room was redesigned for a bright, open feel, enhanced by the relocated lighting and an updated fireplace. The sunroom, connected to the office, offers a serene, light-filled escape. The laundry and mudroom were reimagined for everyday functionality, and the primary suite became a true retreat, while the guest bathroom was updated for comfort and style.

Every room was carefully curated to blend form with function, making this a home that’s ready to host, live, and relax in.

How the vision came to be

The Before Stage

The client really loved their home, but the floor plan wasn’t working for their lifestyle. Entertaining was challenging with the limited space, and the original layout made everything feel disconnected. The home needed more room, especially to accommodate the areas they used most—on a single level. The biggest challenge was finding a balance between scale and keeping things manageable. Since the family planned to live in the home during the remodel, we needed a phased approach that kept their routine as normal as possible while transforming the space.

Design & Planning Stage

This is where the vision took shape. We designed a 1,800+ square foot one-level addition, expanding the home’s footprint without introducing stairs. The layout was focused on creating a seamless flow for both everyday living and hosting. We worked in key features such as large south-facing windows, improved cross-ventilation, and a two-kitchen setup. The main show kitchen was designed for gathering with a large island and seating, while the working kitchen efficiently handled prep work, small appliances, and all of the functional needs of daily life.

Finished Project

The new layout now supports both hosting and everyday comfort effortlessly. The show kitchen is open, bright, and designed with a large island that invites gathering, while the working kitchen keeps cooking and prep areas neatly tucked away. The flow between the kitchen, living, and dining spaces feels natural and open. The sunroom and office, connected with expansive windows, bring in natural light while offering cozy retreats. The mudroom, laundry room, and primary suite all provide added functionality without compromising the home’s organic modern aesthetic. The home now feels cohesive and complete, with a new roof tying everything together seamlessly—this truly feels like it was always meant to be.
