Make room for the moments that need their own place.

A Place for Every Kind of Gathering

A Retreat Designed for Family Life

The Yinglings saw a chance to make better use of a property they already loved. They didn’t want an ADU that felt separate from daily life. They wanted a space their family would naturally return to, with enough flexibility to make ordinary days feel a little more fun and exciting.

Project summary:

Before construction, this part of the Yinglings’ property had room to become something more. The question was not simply what could be built there; it was what kind of place would still feel meaningful once the novelty wore off. The answer became an ADU shaped around the family’s rhythm and the feeling of having somewhere special without leaving home.

Inside, moody cabinetry and maple slat details add character to the living space, while the garage was given the same level of design attention as the interiors. Outside, a firepit patio and sports court extend the experience beyond the building itself. The result is an ADU that feels fully integrated into the property and the family’s routine.

From open land to a family retreat

open property site before detached ADU construction

A quiet corner with real potential

The project started with land that had room to become more meaningful. For the Yinglings, the goal was not simply to fill that space. They wanted a structure that would make the property feel more complete and give the family another place to spend time together. That meant the design had to feel connected to daily life, not tucked away from it. The site gave the project a strong starting point.

The work behind the walls

A ground-up build asks for countless decisions before the beautiful parts can be seen. The foundation, garage layout, insulation, mechanical systems, and interior planning all had to support the way the family would eventually use the space. Even the placement of the structure mattered, especially because the sports court was already such a strong part of the property. The construction phase gave the design a practical backbone.
finished ADU retreat with kitchenette and pool table lounge

A place that invites people in

Now, the finished space feels like a natural extension of home. The kitchenette gives the room an easy gathering point, while the lounge and game areas make the interior feel relaxed right away. The garage keeps the structure practical without pulling focus from the design. Just outside, the patio connection lets the energy of the space carry into the yard with ease.
